Of all the myths about the elliptical, the one about the flywheel is best known: the bigger the circle the better. And although most people do not even know how this circle looks, everyone wants it to be as heavy and as large as possible.
The truth is that the size and weight of the flywheel were invented for marketing purposes. Exactly the point is that one elliptical, which you see only on the Internet, was different from the other elliptical, who you see only on the Internet a parameter. This parameter can be expressed in numbers and in this way distinguish one elliptical from the other. You can also give the weight of the wheel in the description of the equipment – 20kg, while it is really 6kg, because no one will check it.
The weight of the wheel given in kilograms is a parameter that means nothing compared to the spacing of feet, step length, step depth and overall machine quality. A heavy flywheel is more often a disadvantage than an advantage, especially for smaller, weaker users. That’s why in most machines wheels with a weight of 6 to 12 kg are used – that’s enough for 12kg and it does not have to be better than 6kg.
Personally, this particular parameter is not important to me, I never ask for it or know the weight of the wheels in particular machines. I am just talking about this topic, so that you will not be fooled by the marketing gimmick, because behind a bigger wheel there is usually a catch.
The flywheel in the elliptical, is responsible for the smooth movement of the device, and for setting the maximum load. Theoretically, once, a long time ago, in machines with a mechanical brake, the heavier wheel was more fluid and more load-bearing. Now, practically 6 kilogram flywheel guarantees decent load and comfortable smoothness of movements. In elliptical for home use Kettler is a big weight of the wheel, which was the first in Poland to offer home elliptical with a flywheel weighing over 10 kilograms.
The circle in the elliptical cross trainer should be balanced and calculated so that it works well in a given model! Moreover, a large part of companies in Poland simply provides false data on this parameter.
To check the weight of the wheel, the elliptical needs to be unscrewed. Unscrewing we lose the manufacturer’s warranty. That’s why no one does it, and distributors in Poland cheat customers on the weight of the wheel for power, misrepresenting it by over 100%. This is a standard practice in our country and only a few companies in Poland approach this topic honestly.
Installing a huge wheel in a cheap elliptical makes little sense and no one is doing it in the world. Only they believe that they came to the windfall – a big wheel in a cheap elliptic.
In the end, choosing a machine for yourself, you must first test it and compare it best with other equipment.
